The relevance problem of management research

It is a general impression in the management literature that research knowledge lacks practical relevance. Yet, there is no common sense of what practical relevance actually means, how it can be increased and if increasing practical relevance is the aim of management science after all. Most management scholars have their own understanding of the reasons for the lack of relevance and which means might lead to an increase in practical relevance of research knowledge.

The aim of this dissertation project is to conduct a large scale study among management scholars and to show the individual attitudes of management scholars towards the so-called relevance problem and their application of implications to solve the relevance problem. This analysis will show what determines the application of those implications and what needs to be done to solve the relevance problem.
